CS373 Fall 2020: Michael Chan

Where did you grow up?

Arlington, Texas.

What high school did you attend?

Fort Worth Country Day.

What was your favorite extracurricular activity in high school?

Playing the violin. I was part of an extracurricular orchestra called the Fort Worth Youth Orchestra.

Why did you come to UT?

I came to UT because I knew that it had a solid CS program.

Why are you majoring in CS?

It’s interesting, and I like programming.

Why are you in this class?

I want to get more experience with software engineering. Particularly the full-stack aspect of it.

What are your expectations of this class?

I expect to learn a lot about Python. The way Professor Downing taught OOP allowed me to fully understand a lot of C++’s nuances, so I’d expect that SWE will do something similar with Python.

How much Javascript/Python/Web programming do you already know?

I have experience with JavaScript and web programming from my previous internships, and I know a little bit of Python because of FRI.

How did you like the two lectures?

They were good. I liked Downing’s explanation of how to set up Docker.

How did you feel about the cold calling?

I took OOP last semester, so I’m used to it. I think it’s good because it makes people pay attention.

What made you happy this week?

I watched a lot of movies that I’ve been meaning to watch.

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

If you want a good way to test out web applications, check out Selenium.
